Choosing the Right Aesthetic Physician for Yourself

The Medical Aesthetics industry is a booming industry, what with new Medical Aesthetics clinics popping up like mushrooms after a rainstorm. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it offers consumers the option to choose which clinic or doctor they like best.

But do you really know which Aesthetic doctor would best suit your needs? Of course qualification, experience, skills and even reputation carry utmost importance when choosing a Medical Aesthetics provider but almost every Medical Aesthetics doctor will claim to be the best in their field, and would offer you the best treatment modalities, albeit at a hefty price tag.

So how do you choose a Medical Aesthetics provider who will suit you best? How about looking at the dynamics between you and your Aesthetics Physician? What sort of relationship are you seeking with your Aesthetic Physician?

Here we analyse the different types of relationship models between the physician and patient. These models have been derived from the Emanuel and Emanuel’s models of physician patient relationship in the 90’s.

1. Paternalistic

In this physician patient relationship, the physician plays a paternalistic role. In this type of relationship, your physician will choose the treatment most likely (in their professional opinion) to give you the best Aesthetics outcome.

The paternalistic approach is not unlike one of an actual parent-child interaction. The doctor tells you that this is what is best for you, you just do not know it yet.

Would this suit you?

This relationship would best suit you if you are extremely open to suggestions and are trusting of your Aesthetic Physician.

2. Informative

As the word informative would suggest, this type of relationship is where the physician acts as an information provider to the patient/customer.

You may or may not already have a certain degree of information in regards to the treatment that you are interested in, and the doctor’s duty is to provide you the lowdown on that treatment, as well as suggest any other treatment which may be beneficial to your case.

Would this suit you?

If you are the type who needs to be fed more information and need time to deliberate on your treatment options before plunging, then this physician patient relationship would satisfy your needs.

3. Interpretative

You may have your own values and ideals regarding your own Aesthetics/appearance. In this approach, the focus is on your own values, and the physician plays more of an advisory role, offering their expert opinion to assist your decision making (if it is not already decided in your mind).

Would this suit you?

If you are a person with strong opinions and values, then this dynamics would be the best suited for you. You may respect your doctor’s professionalism, but you have a stubborn mindset.

You should be prepared to say good bye to some doctors and/or providers, as their values and opinions may at times be incompatible to yours.

4. Deliberative

This is not just a type of relationship between physician and patient, in fact this type is a quite literally a relationship. In this relationship, you and your doctor will be having discussions rather than consultations regarding your treatments.

Your doctor will be your best friend/accomplice on your Aesthetics journey. The interaction will be two ways, with the doctor persuading you (softly).

Would this suit you?

If you are a social person that values genuine relationship with your Aesthetic Medical doctor, this would.
